The Best Water Activities and Ocean Sports to enjoy on The East Coast of Mexico

Select your favorite ocean sports for your seaside vacation along the coast of Mexico and see what sorts of ocean activities you can enjoy.

Whether you are searching for water activities for kids or something that can be enjoyed at any age, the ocean is a playground of fun things to do in the water. Before you set sail and head off to Mexico's eastern shores we want to show you some of the wonderful water sports and vacation activities that you can start looking forward to.

Whilst this is not a complete list (because that would be a book) this list will get you started on some of the main points of interest for ocean lovers and avid swimmers.

Let's dive in!

Swimming

This may be the most obvious thing you can possibly do in the water but it is still one of the best water activities that can be enjoyed by many. Whether you are looking to get your heart pumping with some exuberant exercise or are just looking for a casual dip, the ocean is a great place to stretch out and stare up at the clouds.

However, always remember to follow all local safety advice along with any sensible water guidelines and to know your own limits because the ocean is to be respected. This goes for all the upcoming activities but it's worth mentioning from the start.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling is still technically swimming but with a very different purpose. Just as walking is not birdwatching, snorkeling involves much more. Rather than just going from A to B, a snorkeler is someone who is eager to find underwater ocean wonders. Whether you are discovering colorful ocean corals or vibrant tropical fish, there is so much to see and you are sure to only be able to capture a small glimpse of it all during your time here.

The East coast of Mexico is also famous for the second largest barrier reef in the world, the Mesoamerican reef. This location just a short distance from Playa Mujeres is one of the most spectacular snorkeling spots in the entire world. It's definitely worth the experience.

Scuba Diving

There are a ton of scuba spots throughout the Mexican ocean where you can discover deep sea wildlife and beauty. However, we can't mention scuba diving and seaside vacations in Mexico without diving into the incredible underwater cenote caves that are found all over the Yucatan Peninsula.

With a winding network of water filled caves, you can snorkel through them and feel like a true explorer venturing through the darkness into the great unknown. It can be scary but it can also be one of the most experiential water activities in all of the east coast of Mexico.

Paddleboarding

Want to chill atop the water and paddle along the gentle waves? Get a paddleboard. Like Kayaks, this is usually something that is included amongst the listed resort activities by most All Inclusive resorts making it an easily accessible ocean sport to indulge in.

People use paddleboarding in a variety of ways including fishing, yoga, exploration, surfing and even racing. It's a versatile option where you stand on top of a sturdy board and use a long oar to move yourself around the ocean's surface.

Sailing

Sailing is a term that has been used to describe the sport or activity of controlling a variety of different boats and ships. On a seaside vacation, you may be talking about booking a ride on a 30-70ft long catamaran or a luxury yacht. However, the real sailor experience comes with hiring a private sailboat.

This is a conventional looking boat with a proper sail, the wind in your hair, and the open ocean at your fingertips. It gives you the full experience of freedom of the waters and allows you to immerse yourself in the true Caribbean ambiance of the seas.

Water Polo

You may know of Polo and immediately assume that water Polo means people riding horses in a swimming pool with long golf clubs. Thankfully, this is not the case. Water polo is similar to water volleyball but instead of throwing a ball over a net, your team throws a ball into the opponent's net that works much like a soccer goal.

If you know what handball is, then it is basically that, but in the comfort of your resort's swimming pool (however, I'm sure you could also enjoy your own version in the ocean). It can get very fast and very active and often results in some amount of entertaining chaos.

Kayaking

A great alternative to the paddleboard is the trusty ocean Kayak. It's faster, sleeker, and requires a bit more skill to get the hang of it. But, it allows you to sit down and it's a lot of fun. An additional advantage that kayaks hold is that they are much better for longer distances so if you are planning to venture fairly far, a kayak may be a better option than the stand up paddleboard (stand up paddleboards are nothing to do with live comedy).

If you are not sure though, why not try out both and see what you feel most comfortable with?

Water aerobics

Water aerobics is, yes, you guessed it… aerobics in the water. People usually immerse themselves up to their waist or higher so that they have freedom of movement to perform a variety of aqua exercises.

This is something that is suitable for many individuals of differing ages and is often said to have double the benefits over standard aerobics. It's a peaceful and safe way to get your workout whilst enjoying the cool waters on a sunny day.

So which water sport will you most enjoy?

Knowing which water activities or ocean sports are going to be best for you is a bit like selecting your favorite meal. Some may appeal to you more than others but in the end, you won't know until you try them all out.
